Empty Units
The industrial estates in the Littlehampton area, like many depressed areas in the UK, are full of empty factory units.
There are several companies that are doing very well and have international reputations for their work. Littlehampton should be proud of these companies, as many have resisted moving to where the cheap labour is and have taken advantage of the cheap labour that has moved here (luckily as they get free housing, they can demand lower wages than greedy local people claim they need to survive).
But many local companies have fallen by the wayside and the number of jobs in the area is not rising proportionately with the population.
On the Wick estates there are many buildings that look large and industrious but are often, in fact, large warehouses with very low levels of staff.
A recent poll suggested that more people worked in the high street burger restaurant than in all the local manufacturing plants, although this statistic has not been verified.
