Character - how to lose it
Littlehampton has recently lost some interesting old buildings including a Victorian railway warehouse, an old Edwardian building on a prominent corner and the St. Francis nursing home.
Stupidly, many locals had hoped that these fine old buildings would be preserved as they had a positive effect on the character of the town. But the developers, in bed with the council planning officers, have ripped them all down generally in favour of retirement homes, or crumbly centres as they are affectionately known.
A fine Edwardian building was demolished to make way for a cluster of tiny “retirement” homes for people born, ironically, in Edwardian times.
